General Information

  • The Study: The Book of Revelation, its major themes, its use of OT and gospel imagery, and especially its relevance for today.  Please don’t be intimidated by the subject.  We will not be looking at a bunch of complicated charts or agonizing over what this or that detail might mean.  This is Revelation like you may have never read it before!  American Christians are usually dumbfounded when they discover that Revelation is one of the most popular and comforting books of the Bible to believers in Third-World countries.  How so?  We’re going to find out.
  • The Returning King by Vern PoythressThe Study Materials:  Your Bible (imagine that!), the book called “The Returning King” by Vern Poythress, and a 3-ring notebook with Poythress powerpoint slides (for discussion).

  1. Kirk says:

In Rev ch. 7, Dan (I think) is missing from the list of the tribes, and Joseph gets 2 sets of 12,000. Do you have any idea why?

  2. Good observation and question, Kirk. No one catches this unless they both know the OT and they are paying close attention. When you come across peculiarities like this, ask yourself why the thing expected has changed, and why it has changed to what it is?

First, in this case, the tribe of Dan is missing from the tribal list. Why would Dan be omitted? The reason seems to be that Dan was the tribe that basically fell headlong into idolatry. Dan was allotted the northernmost track of land in Canaan and was thus the furthest from the national worship center (the Temple) in Jerusalem. One of the kings of the northern kingdom of Israel (I can’t remember which off the top of my head) set up two alternative national worship centers, one of which was in the region of Dan. They were particularly unfaithful folks up there, and God judged them so that they basically got subsumed back into the pagan nations. In a word, they lost their inheritance through unfaithfulness.

Second, you noticed that Joseph gets two tribes (Joseph and his son the tribe of Manasseh). Most of the time in the Bible Joseph is counted as two tribes (Ephraim and Manasseh) because Joseph’s sons were in a sense adopted (blessed) by his father Jacob (Gen 48). I don’t know why the double-tribe of Joseph is counted in Rev 7 differently. Ask me again and I’ll consult a commentary. :-)

Third, note that the land allotment lists in the OT are different from the tribal list in Rev 7. Levi did not inherit any one piece of land because his tribe was to live in the scattered cities in order to teach all the tribes God’s law. But in Rev 7, he is listed among the 12 tribes. So interestingly, it is actually Levi who is taking the place of Dan, not Manasseh. Remember the golden calf incident? The Levitical priests were basically faithful to God compared to the other tribes. Faithful Levi replaces unfaithful Dan. Note this fits in perfectly with the theology of “overcoming” in Revelation. Those who are unfaithful, who worship the Beast and prostitute themselves with Babylon, God will judge by fighting against them. Those who remain faithful by overcoming (even to death) will be invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb and live in the unmediated presence of God in the New Jerusalem. Amen!

    Update:

OK, I’ve learned my lesson regarding answering off the top of my head without consulting the Biblical text or a good commentary. I offer here a couple of clarifications and corrections to my initial thoughts.

The tribe of Dan was not allotted the northernmost track of land in Canaan. I was thinking of the city of Dan located in the far northern regions, which is frequently cited in the comprehensive north-to-south formula for all the land of Israel: “from Dan to Beersheba”. But the tribe of Dan was associated with gross idolary (Jud 18:30-31), and indeed was “the first to perpetrate the sin of apostasy, for they accepted a golden calf that Jeroboam placed in the northern part of Israel as a center of worship” (Kistemaker, Commentary on Revelation, p 251). Kistemaker also notes that Dan was among the first tribes to be exiled: “The tribe of Dan became part of Syria during the reign of King Asa (1 Kgs 15:20; 2 Chr 16:4) and was returned to Israel when Jeroboam II conquered it (2 Kgs 14:25); the Assyrian ruler Tiglath-Pileser II seized the area in 722 BC and exiled its people (2 Kgs 15:29)” (p 251, fn 18). He argues that Manasseh replaces Dan in the Rev 7 list.

Kistemaker also argues that the tribe of Ephraim is also omitted from the list because of idolary (1 Kgs 12:29), and is replaced by Joseph. He says that Levi is in the tribal list because the context is not military service or territory allotment. But I disagree. In the OT, the tribe of Joseph is equated with either Manasseh or Ephraim, and as far as I can tell Joseph is never listed separately over against either Manasseh or Ephraim as another tribe (see Num 13:7, 11; 34:23; 36:5, 12; Josh 18:11; Ps 78:67). Additionally, all of Revelation is about spiritual warfare, war between the church and its earthly enemies (the Beast, False Prophet, and Harlot) and war between the Christ and his spiritual foe Satan (the Dragon). So I still say that Levi replaces Dan in the list, and Joseph is standing in for Ephraim (which has OT precedent: Ps 78:67). But this is a very minor disagreement. Most admit there is not one perfect solution to the quirks in the tribal list. Hope this clarifies.
