Why should you trust the Bible?
The Bible can be trusted because it has proven trustworthy. Historically, no other book has been subjected to such a level of criticism and rigorous study, and yet the Bible proves itself like no other book. It claims to be the very word of God. It invites us to test its veracity by utilizing reason and eyewitness testimonies. Christians can be certain that the Bible is supernatural rather than human in origin, and can easily remember the major points of evidence by using the acronym MAPS.[1]
1. Manuscript Evidence
a. How do we know that the Bible we have today hasn’t changed since the originals are extinct? By comparing the multitude of ancient manuscripts (MSS) with one another.
b. The more MSS we have of a written work, the easier it is to find discrepancies in certain copies in order to identify the original, unchanged text.
c. There are 5,686 known NT MSS in Greek, and close to 25,000 NT MSS counting all languages. Compare these numbers to 643 MSS of Homer’s Iliad, 200 MSS of Demosthenes’ work, 10 of Julius Caesar’s writings, and only 8 of Herodotus’ work.
d. Not a single major Christian doctrine is made questionable by a textual variant.
e. We can be confident that the message we have today is the same as the message originally recorded.
